SylviaOn December 20, 2009 as I walked on stage to receive my college diploma, a feeling of accomplishment and triumph rushed through my body.  There was no possible way to hide the smile that covered my face!  Who would of known that the young girl growing up on the South Side of Chicago in the Back of the Yards Community, not knowing what a university was, would one day graduate from a four-year institution with a degree in Human Resource Management, Psychology, and a minor in Business Administration?

My journey began when my mother transferred me to San Miguel in 1998.  Although I was nervous, I was excited to embark on a new journey.  I am happy to say that the trip has led me through great opportunities and even greater achievements, both personally and academically.

As I look back on my first day at San Miguel, I remember taking my first reading test on the computer.  The results stunned me and I admit, embarrassed me.  I was in sixth grade and my vocabulary and reading level were of a third grader.  At that moment, I remember setting my first goal ever, "I will be at a sixth grade reading level before the end of the year!"  Not only did I accomplish my goal that year, but also by eighth grade, I was reading 11th grade level books.  I now realize that I could not have attained my goal by myself.  Fortunately, I had the support of my teachers who were dedicated to help me achieve all my goals.  Those goals were both in the classroom and out on the basketball court!

San Miguel continued to be a part of my life during high school through the Graduate Support Program.  I remember going to San Miguel straight from Maria High School every evening. What is great about this program is the tutors from various colleges and universities around Chicago that help the students with homework, papers, and projects.  In 2003 a few students from the graduate program attended the "Si Se Puede" conference at Lewis University.  That day I remember making my next big decision, "I want to attend Lewis University."

I became a Lewis Flyer in August 2005.  The following four years were amazing!  I grew immensely in all aspects; I feel stronger, more determined, and better prepared. The confidence that I built at San Miguel helped me to not only participate in various organizations, but also to become a leader on campus.  Aside from my academic achievements, I was extremely happy when I was nominated to do the closing prayer at commencement.  It was an honor for me, especially because I was given the opportunity to do it both in English and in Spanish!

As graduation approached an even greater door opened up for me.  I received a call from the President and Executive Director of San Miguel Schools, Mike Anderer-McClelland.  He told me about an opportunity to join the San Miguel family as a graduate.  I felt honored to be able to have a part in the mission of the school, "To transform lives and neighborhoods."  As a graduate, I have lived the mission of the School. The impact that teachers, staff, and parents have on students, and their dedication to give every student the opportunity they deserve to get ahead through education and extracurricular involvement is unique and powerful.  Now it is my turn to give back!  I am very happy to now serve San Miguel as the Administrative Assistant for the Business Office and to contribute my knowledge and work experience back to a community that has given me so much!
