Recently, Gary Comer Campus 8th grade student, Armani, visited our nation's capital to attend the  People to People World Leadership Forum.  As an emerging leader in his class, Armani was nominated by his teacher, Mr. Tim Johnson, to participate in the Forum, which included approximately 150 middle school students from around the world.  People to People offers students like Armani, educators, athletes, and professionals unique opportunities for personal and professional growth and continuing education. The Oak Park River Forest Community Foundation generously awarded Armani with a Crystal Fund Grant to finance his memorable experience.

During his time in Washington, DC, Armani participated in discussions focusing on the topics of Understanding the U.S. Government, as well as Remembering the Past, Building the Future.  He also developed his leadership skills centering on the theme of Building a New Nation.  Finally, he had many opportunities to explore Washington, DC, visiting the National Air and Space Museum, International Spy Museum, National Museum of American History, memorials, monuments, and many other sites.

When recalling his trip, Armani quickly recognized that Washington, DC is an inspirational place and is the heart of the United States' leadership.  He said, "If I keep being a good student and good leader, I could end up working here some day."  Armani is interested in a career in medicine or law, and it is clear that his interest in government is increasing as a result of this trip.  When asked about his favorite part of the trip, Armani said, "I loved when we got to sit at the Reflecting Pool and write in our journals.  It was great being surrounded by the monuments."  Another memorable moment of the trip was visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.  "My granddad fought in that war.  To see the statues and names of all the soldiers gave me a better understanding of what happened.  I have more respect for him now and appreciate the time he and the soldiers gave."
