For the past two years, the Wiebking family has been committed to the mission of San Miguel. Their story begins in 2007 when they were invited by San Miguel supporters, Bryan and Colleen Foy, to attend the first School of Rock at the Museum of Contemporary Art. After this initial introduction the Wiebking's continued to learn more about the mission through co-founders Bro. Ed Siderewicz and Gordon Hannon, whose "deep commitment to San Miguel was compelling," reflects Sharon.
As the first college graduates in their families, both Sharon and Guy understand the value of education. "We believe that everyone deserves the opportunities that our parents sacrificed to give to us," says Sharon. What truly spoke to the Wiebking's was that "San Miguel has reached out to children living in communities where their parents are struggling to provide the best they can for their families," states Guy. "The obstacles they must overcome are immense. The teachers, administrators, and the support staff at San Miguel stand with the parents to offer guidance, support, and a good education to these children." Their commitment stands on the belief that the mission of San Miguel is proven to affect change. "We believe that San Miguel transforms lives. We are very fortunate to be able to contribute our time and our money to an organization that makes such a profound difference."
The Wiebking's have truly taken this belief to heart with their unwavering involvement in the mission. For the past two years, Sharon Wiebking has served as a regular volunteer with the Back of the Yards Campus, and Guy has been a devoted and active member of the Board of Directors. Through the involvement of Guy and Sharon, their daughter Kathy has joined the San Miguel Junior Board and has been a dedicated member since 2008.
Their commitment to San Miguel extends to this year's School of Rock. "We attended the first two School of Rock events, and we are looking forward to the third one," state Guy and Sharon. "It's a high energy event. The music is great and everyone, including the performers, is having fun. Last year all our guests announced, ‘We're coming back next year!' And they are!"
The Wiebking's have generously sponsored School of Rock in the past, but this year, they have committed to two Platinum sponsorships. "We understand that small, private schools are difficult to sustain, even more so in our current economy. At this time, we believe San Miguel, as it moves forward with strong leadership, requires even greater financial support than it has needed in the past," stated Guy and Sharon, when asked what drove their decision to commit to these two sponsorship levels. They continued, "We want to do whatever we can to contribute. This year, we were fortunate enough to be able to commit to two boxes. We can't think of a better way to use our money. Additionally, this event is a great way of introducing our friends to the San Miguel mission."
The Wiebking's have resided in Illinois for thirty-five years and lived full-time in Chicago for four years. Their philanthropic efforts extend wider than their involvement with San Miguel as long-time supporters of Mercy Home and Catholic Charities. Upon retiring and moving to Chicago, Sharon has tutored through the Chicago Lights program at Fourth Presbyterian Church and through Literacy Chicago.
Outside of Chicago, Guy is also on the board of the Clara Abbott Foundation. For over sixteen years, he has also served on hospital and health system boards. Eleven of those years were on the Provena System Board, where he was the Chair for five years. Currently, he is employed as Provena's President and CEO.
