San Miguel welcomed students from the Latin School of Chicago, located in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. Latin School students came to San Miguel as part of their Community Service Day. Students from both schools participated in a neighborhood clean up, which included painting over graffiti, sweeping the school's parking lot, and cleaning the school grounds.
The afternoon wasn't all work and no play. After all of their hard work, the students played dodge ball together. Tim Cronister, Latin School's Director of Student Life, accompanied the 6th grade students to the Back of the Yards community.
"One of our students was struck by how different the neighborhood is from the neighborhood where Latin School is located. He talked about how the kids he worked with from San Miguel seemed more like him than not. He said he learned something from that perspective."
"It's important for students from diverse backgrounds to come together and learn from one another," said Mike Anderer-McClelland, Principal of the San Miguel Schools - Back of the Yards Campus. "We are very grateful to the Latin School for their service to our community. I hope this is the beginning of a partnership between the two schools."
