The school's library received hardcover copies of the nineteen books that comprise this year's Bookshelf, fifteen of which are classic works of English literature and four are books in Spanish translation. Each book reflects the theme of "Freedom" and has been chosen to engage young readers as well as parents and teachers. This program, presented by the National Endowment for the Humanities in cooperation with the American Library Association, encourages young people to read and understand great literature while exploring the themes of American history and culture. In addition to the books, the school's library also received posters, bookmarks, and other materials to help encourage student interest in the books. This year's titles are: The Girl who Loved Wild Horses, Paul Revere's Ride, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The House of Dies Drear, Chronicles of Narnia, Ben and Me, Fahrenheit 451, To Be a Slave, Across Five Aprils, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, My Antonia, Animal Farm, Miracle at Philadelphia, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, and Sam The Minuteman. The Gary Comer Campus is thrilled to be a beneficiary of this award and has several activities planned out for the year to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity, including the creation of an after school "Book Club" for students who are interested in the topic of freedom, where they will engage in discussions led by a teacher. |
