Go to Back of the Yards Campus
The Gary Comer Campus was established in the fall of 2002, bringing
the San Miguel model to the west side of Chicago. For years, the founders,
board, and donors of San Miguel had expressed the desire to duplicate the
success of the San Miguel model in another community in Chicago, but funds
were limited for such an endeavor.
In 2002, Lands' End founder Gary Comer,
presented a generous and bold $1.2 million grant to San Miguel to
start a San Miguel School in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago.
Four years later, the San Miguel Gary Comer Campus has
become a beacon of hope on the West Side. In a neighborhood that presented the
highest homicide rates in Chicago for 2003 (Chicago Tribune), and the second highest high
school dropout rates in the state of Illinois (Annie E. Casey Foundation), students
of San Miguel are excelling in reading and math, having improved as much as two reading grade
levels in their first six months at San Miguel.
Our Gary Comer Campus of San Miguel
currently offers classes for 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Students
are accepted based on academic and financial need. 94% of these
students qualified for the government's free and reduced lunch
programs in 2004-2005, and the average San Miguel family is a 4.2 person household
earning $20,300.
Celebrate with us the highest achievements of the 2006-2007
academic year!
