The Back of the Yards Campus of San Miguel was founded in 1995 in a
convent dining room, with 18 students, a staff of 4, and a
$50,000 pilot grant.
Today, the Back of the Yards Campus has
become a model for urban education, providing opportunities to
children and families most in need.
Located behind the historic Stockyards, the
Back of the Yards neighborhood (part of New City) is home to a
predominantly Latino population on the south side of Chicago.
The neighborhood presents the highest high
school dropout rates in the state of Illinois and second
highest in the country. Of those dropouts, 24.3% are not
currently working. (Annie E. Casey Foundation). This
neighborhood also had the second highest homicide rates in
Chicago for 2003 (Chicago Tribune).
Our Back of the Yards Campus of San Miguel
currently offers classes for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Students
are accepted based on academic and financial need. 100% of these
students qualified for the government's free and reduced lunch
programs, and the average San Miguel family is a 5.3 person household
earning $27,000.
